Places To Stay On Holiday in Powys

Gwaenynog Farmhouse is a beautiful B&B in a quiet and scenic location, about a mile from the River Vyrnwy. The stunning views and wildlife of Lake Vyrnwy are also just 9 miles away.

We are at approx 600 feet above sea level, so have some amazing views, including the imposing presence of Moel Bentyrch. Originally part of a much larger working farm, Gwaenynog now has 16 acres of land with sheep grazing happily, although not our own just yet... Look out for the lambs during March- May!

The majority of the Powys' population is made up of villages and small towns. The largest towns are Newtown, Ystradgynlais, Brecon, and Welshpool with larger populations. Powys has the lowest population density of all the principal areas of Wales.

Powys covers the historic counties of Montgomeryshire and Radnorshire, most of Brecknockshire (Breconshire) and a small part of Denbighshire, making it the largest county in Wales by land area.

Most of Powys is mountainous, with north-south transportation by car being difficult. Powys is bounded to the north by Gwynedd, Denbighshire and Wrexham; to the west by Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire; to the east by Shropshire and Herefordshire; and to the south by Rhondda Cynon Taf, Merthyr Tydfil, Caerphilly, Blaenau Gwent, Monmouthshire and Neath Port Talbot.

Whilst every effort is made to ensure that these half term holiday dates are accurate, there are occasions when circumstances beyond our control may result in changes.

The Brecon Beacons National Park was established in 1957, the third of the three Welsh parks after Snowdonia in 1951 and the Pembrokeshire Coast in 1952. It stretches from Llandeilo in the west to Hay-on-Wye in the east, covering 519 square miles and encompassing four main regions - the Black Mountain in the west, Fforest Fawr (Great Forest) and the Brecon Beacons in the centre and the confusingly named Black Mountains in the east.

The majority of the National Park is bare, grassy moorland grazed by Welsh mountain ponies and Welsh mountain sheep, with scattered forestry plantations and pasture in the valleys. The Brecon Beacons National Park is known for its remote reservoirs, waterfalls including the 90 foot (or 27 metre) Henrhyd Waterfall and the falls at Ystradfellte and its caves, such as Ogof Ffynnon Ddu.

The Brecon Beacons Mountain Centre was opened in 1966 to help visitors and tourists to fully understand and enjoy the area.
