Places to visit on a short half term break in Dundee, Scotland.

Book a short half term holiday in Dundee and explore this fascinating and vibrant city in Scotland.

A 12 mile drive out of Dundee will bring you to Glamis Castle. The castle was the birthplace of Princess Margaret and a favourite with the royal family as a whole, and is the ancestral home of the Earls of Strathmore, providing them with a home since 1372. It was the childhood home of the Queen Mother and everywhere you look in this stunning ancient castle the legacy of the royal family is apparent. It is also said to have provided Shakespeare with the inspiration for Macbeth, with Glamis being mentioned specifically in the play.

The grounds are a tour in themselves, with the Italian garden, woodland walk and pet cemetery making interesting walks. But the best way to get the most from a visit to Glamis Castle is to take one of the guided tours that run throughout the day. An experienced guide will take visitors round all available rooms in the castle, answer questions, and will introduce visitors to all aspects of the castle, including the presence of the resident ghost!

In the city centre of Dundee a trip round the shops can be accompanied by a spot of statue hunting. The city centre and surrounding area has a striking collection of full sized statues scattered around for visitors to find. The statue of Desperate Dan is one of the most famous, but there are also Queen Victoria, Robert Burns, Admiral Duncan and the Strathmartine Dragon.

There is also a plaque to be found at St Paul's Cathedral, which was previously the site of Dundee Castle, in memory of William Wallace. This is said to be the very spot where Wallace began his war for Scottish independence.
