Dumfries is a market town in the south of Scotland close to the Solway Firth and was the hometown of Robert Burns during his final years. Today the town celebrates the life of Robert Burns with statues, the Robert Burns Centre, his mausoleum in St. Michael’s churchyard and the use of Burns’s house as a museum, open to the public and free to enter.
The house, tucked quietly in a side street, is a fascinating memorial to the great writer. The tiny rooms tell visitors much about his life, with his study, containing only the desk Burns wrote at, being so small it is only possible for a couple of people to enter at a time. The writer’s own signature which he scratched into a window pane with his diamond ring is still easily visible on the upstairs window.
It was another writer and poet local to Dumfries, David Dunbar, who gave the town the name ‘Queen of the South’ in 1857 when he stood for general election. The name stuck and is still used today, most notably by Dumfries’s football club who simply call themselves ‘Queen of the South Football Club’. Dumfries has held onto its history while embracing modern life.
