The corner of Devon sitting to the west of Exmoor, and above Barnstaple, is one of open spaces and big beaches. Inspiring gardens and zoos meet rolling green hillsides, rugged coastline, and miles of pristine sand dunes laced with winding pathways and studded with exquisite wild flowers.

It is a great destination for a family holiday with lots to see and do.

North Devon: A Day at the Zoo and Getting Lost in the Sand Dunes

North Devon Half Term Tourist AttractionsThe main beaches are those at Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton. Whilst these beaches differ in character, all have great sand, big Atlantic waves (making surfing and bodyboarding very popular), lots of facilities, and lifeguards in attendance at peak summer holiday times.

Back inland, Exmoor Zoological Park has a good collection of animals, particularly cats, primates and birds. It makes a compelling day out for all the family, with 'hands-on' live shows and plenty to see. At nearby Combe Martin, the wildlife park has a different, but equally interesting collection of animals, and the popular novelty of the dinosaur show. Both Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park and the zoo make great days out, and have websites giving full details.

Energetic walkers may even make it all the way across to reach Saunton Sands! The centre of the burrows can be accessed from Sandy Lane car park, or the southerly end, via the toll road across Braunton marshes, accessed from Vellator Way just outside Braunton.

Good family destinations, like north Devon, with big surf, sparkling sand and fun day trips add that all important extra dimension to a family holiday, as do the ever popular fish and chips at the end of another lovely day. These are also in plentiful supply in north Devon.
